God Dice: Dice Upon The Year

Note: The Dice Upon The Year is the smaller of the two dice shown in both photos!

In the ancient Egyptian calendar, there are five “days upon the year” or epagomenal days that bridge the gap between the old year and the new. A god was born on each epagomenal day, and a god is the patron of each new Kemetic year.

The five epagomenal gods are, in order of birth, Osiris (Wesir), Horus the Elder (Heru-wer), Set (also Sutekh or Seth), Isis (Aset), and Nephthys (Nebt-het). Each of Them are represented on this 1″ wooden die: Osiris with the djed pillar, Horus with His signature hawk, Set with a Set-animal or “sha,” Isis with the throne that is Her crown, and Nephthys with the doorway-like hieroglyph that comprises Her headdress.

In addition, from August 2013 to July 2014, the god of the Kemetic year is Horus the Younger (Heru-sa-Aset), the young and victorious king, son of Osiris and Isis. He is the sixth side of the die, symbolized by the Double Crown that He earned through trial and birthright.

Use this die as a form of divination, as a meditational tool, or as a way to choose a god to honor with art or offerings for the day.
