A few nights into Hurricane Sandy’s mess, my mother, who lives in the mountains of West Virginia, told me two of her three dogs had gone missing in the snowstorm that had been dumped on their doorstep. I promised her I’d light a candle for them; they had been gone three days already.

I made this painting for her as part of my long-distance vigil; the word in red means “found.”

Mom called me the next morning to tell me that one of her dogs came home on his own, and a kind gentleman found the other under his porch and dropped him off. We were overjoyed.
